Ten Things You Can Do To Get Ready For Summer - Number 3

Summer Skin Care

Summer is just around the corner, so here are some summer skin care tips...

Properly protect your skin from the sun!  Sunscreen is a year round MUST, but is especially important during the summer months.  To protect your skin from strong summer rays, it is VITAL to use a broad spectrum (UVA AND UVB) sunscreen. There are many misconceptions about sun protection. You probably think that the higher the SPF percentage the better coverage you are getting. This is not necessarily true. SPF ratings only refer to the protection provided against UVB rays, the “burning rays”.  It is just as imperative to block the UVA rays “aging rays”.  Therefore, you are better off using a 15 UVA/UVB SPF rather than a non-broad spectrum sunscreen with a 50 SPF!!!  A second common mistake people make is assuming that if it isn’t sunny, sunscreen isn’t necessary. Not true! Even if the sun is not visible, UV rays can still damage your skin.  Damage is just as likely to occur during the winter months while driving in your car as it is in the summer months at the pool. Rain or shine sunscreen is needed!  Lastly, most people apply their sunscreen in the morning while getting ready for their day, and never reapply it for the rest of the day. Big mistake…even if your sunscreen remained on your skin all day (highly unlikely with perspiration and everyday activity) most sunscreens are only “active” for 3 to 5 hours. It is imperative to reapply sunscreen throughout the day for protection…especially during the sun’s strongest hours between 10:00 am to 3:00 pm!

Vitamin C is a great way to protect your skin from free radicals.  Free radicals dramatically multiply with exposure to the sun and cause wrinkling and discoloration by breaking down your skin’s collagen and elastin.  Topical Vitamin C is a powerful ingredient which directly stimulates collagen production and contributes to skin firmness and elasticity. Medical grade Vitamin C serums are ideal in combating free radical damage.  Unlike over the counter C serums, professional strength C serums use stabilized ascorbic acid which enables the vitamin C to penetrate deeper into the dermis and combat free radicals at the cellular level.

To maintain beautiful bright skin, exfoliate daily!  Slough off the layers of dull, dead skin that built up over the winter months. For your face a daily exfoliating moisturizer and/or the Clarisonic PRO brush will give you a instant glow.  Don’t forget the rest of your body…use a gentle body scrub or a daily body lotion with AHA to freshen and vitalize.  With summer almost upon us, self tanners are an excellent way of giving the skin a sun kissed glow with out the harsh effects of the sun.
