Ditch Your Double Chin With Kybella…
Recently, you may have heard quite a bit about Kybella, which is the first FDA-approved non-surgical injectable treatment that reduces submental fat, AKA “the double chin”. Prior to Kybella, the only option to get rid of this fat was with surgery. Now, there is a safe and effective alternative that only involves a series of small injections. Find out all about how Kybella works with these frequently asked questions…
Is Kybella right for me?
If you are bothered by submental fullness, Kybella may be an excellent option for you. While it does treat a double chin caused by fat, it will not treat a double chin that is caused by sagging skin in that area. To determine if you are a candidate for this procedure, a consultation is necessary so that the area of concern can be properly evaluated.
How does Kybella work?
Kybella is deoxycholic acid which naturally occurs in the body and works by destroying fat cells. It is injected directly into the fat under your chin and once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.
What can I expect during my Kybella treatment?
After your initial consultation, we will take photographs and then numb the area to minimize discomfort. After the treatment area is determined and marked, a series of small injections will be administered. After your treatment, ice and/or a compression to the area (at night) can be used to minimize post-procedure swelling and discomfort.
Will I experience any side effects?
The most common side effects with Kybella treatments are: swelling, bruising, pain, redness, numbness and areas of hardness in the treatment area. If these side effects are experienced, they will typically go away within a few weeks. We advise patients not to plan any significant life events for 3 weeks after their treatment to ensure that if side effects are experienced, that there will be plenty of time for them to diminish. Although rare and not expected, there are more serious side effects that could occur. These include trouble swallowing and nerve injury that could cause facial muscle weakness or an uneven smile. This is not a full list of possible side effects of Kybella treatments. Please call us at (805) 898-0700 for more information or medical advice about side effects.
When will I start to see results?
You will see the full effect of the treatment within 4-6 weeks. We schedule our treatments 6 weeks apart so that we are able reassess you after the product has had enough time for your body to respond to it.
How many treatments will I need?
Each patient is different and the number of treatments needed will vary based off of the amount of fat under your chin. Unfortunately, not every fat cell can be destroyed in a single treatment which is why more than one treatment is often needed. Many patients experience visible contouring of their chin profile after 2-4 treatment sessions spaced out at least 6 weeks apart. In severe cases, up to 6 treatments may be administered. Once the desired aesthetic response is achieved, re-treatment with Kybella is not expected and the results will remain permanent.
How much Kybella will I need per treatment?
The amount of Kybella used during each treatment varies based off of how much fat is present. To determine the exact amount, we will mark the treatment area and apply a grid like pattern that consists of dots. The dots indicate where the injections should be placed and the amount of Kybella is determined by how many dots are within the area of fat that was marked off. Usually, the first treatment requires the most product and as you have less fat in subsequent treatments, usually less product is required.
