3-2-1 Hand Rejuvenation Package

In the words of Joan Rivers. “Believe me, you can hide a lot of things, but the hands always give it away,” I didn’t really get the meaning of this quote until recently when my 3-year niece looked at my hands, pointed and said “old” with all the sweet innocence of a child. You can always rely on them for their honesty- for better for worse. It got me thinking and glancing down at my hands. On occasion, I catch a view and think “do those things really belong to me?” They look a bit like grandma hands and yet I just turned 44! How is this possible?

Before and After 3-2-1 Hand Rejuvenation Package

Well, as you get older, your hands lose volume, fat and elasticity. The fatty layer of the hand disappears, so the skin is more translucent and shriveled, and you see underlying structures like bones, tendons and veins. In addition, sun exposure and heredity can lead to brown spots and pigmentation changes. We all too often focus on the skin on our face, but there are ways to easily pay our hands some attention too.

Here are a few things you can do to help your hands match your face…

Sun protection- use a broad spectrum sunscreen with ingredients like Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide to protect against UVA and UVB sun rays. These ingredients serve as physical blocks versus chemical blocks. I like the SPF 50 from Elta MD UV Sport Broad Spectrum. It is a 9% transparent zinc oxide and is fragrance free, oil free and paraben free.

Choose products to repair and prevent- for thin skin creams such as tretinoin will stimulate collagen regrowth to help smooth the skin and reduce the signs of discoloration. Antioxidant serums such as Skin Ceuticals CE Ferulic Acid protects against environmental damage caused by free radicals that can contribute to aging. In addition, C E Ferulic improves signs of aging and photodamage, the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and the loss of firmness. It’s great to use these products on our face and then just massage what is left onto the backs of your hands.

Explore your options at Pacific Plastic Surgery- if you would like to take your treatment one step further there are some great options that we offer in our office. On my own hands I decided to combine the use of laser with fillers. I, first, did a series of 3 Picosure Focus laser treatments. This laser is indicated for pigmented spots and wrinkles. Studies have shown it can create new collagen and elastin production without the side effects and downtime of more ablative lasers. Generally, you can expect the skin to be red for less than 24 hours. The treatments can be spaced out every 2-4 weeks. After my last session of the laser, I used 1 syringe of Juvederm in each hand. Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid filler or gel that is placed under the skin to smooth the skin and in the case of hands to disguise bulging veins and tendons. The Juvederm is applied by a few injections points across the back of the hand. The product is then gently massaged to fill in the areas of volume loss. There is some swelling that may follow for about one week. I am attaching a photo of my hands before and after the 3 laser treatments and 2 syringes of Juvederm.

I would say that my hands look and feel smoother and less aged and wrinkly. The true test will come when I see my niece again. I am hoping that at this visit, she will have a new adjective in mind when she looks and points at my hands. I’ll gladly take “smooth” or “soft”, thank you very much.
