Popular Mommy Makeover Procedures

Pregnancy takes a toll on a woman’s body and causes a lot of changes to take place. The changes that result from pregnancy and breast feeding cannot always be corrected through diet and exercise alone. Many women find it difficult to gain back their pre-pregnancy body. Dr. Douglas J. Mackenzie, a talented Santa Barbara plastic surgeon, offers mommy makeover procedures to restore a woman’s body and confidence. A mommy makeover involves a combination of procedures that address the most common issues faced by women following pregnancy. A mommy makeover is likely to include a tummy tuck, liposuction, and either breast augmentation and/or a breast lift.

Tummy Tuck

For our patients in Santa Barbara, tummy tuck is the most recommended surgery following pregnancy. After pregnancy, many women find that they are left with extra skin and fat from the belly button down to the pelvic area. This “pouch” is a result of stretched skin and an increase in body fat that occurs during pregnancy. Most women find that even the most strict exercise and diet cannot eliminate this problem. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that is able to tone and tighten this area. During a tummy tuck, Dr. Mackenzie will remove excess skin and fat below the belly button and place the scar low below the bikini line. There will also be a small scar around the belly button.  A tummy tuck can tighten stretched skin and eliminate the extra fat from pregnancy to give you back the toned appearance of your pre-pregnancy body.

During pregnancy, the body produces excess fat to support the growing life in your body. Not all of this fat is deposited in the stomach; many women gain fat around their hips, thighs, and buttocks. Some women find it difficult to return to their pre-pregnancy weight, but even those who do are often left with deposits of fat around the body. Liposuction allows Dr. Mackenzie to  remove this fat. Liposuction is often performed along with a tummy tuck, on the sides of the abdomen, but it can also be used on other areas of the body. Dr. Mackenzie will make small incisions around the affected areas and a suction device called a cannula will be inserted to break up fat between the skin and muscle and remove it from the body. Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift

Breast augmentation and/or breast lift is often included as part of a mommy makeover. After the fluctuation in the size of the breasts during pregnancy and breast feeding, many women are dissatisfied with the appearance of their breasts. Moms may be left with breasts that sag and have lost their shapely appearance. Breast augmentation and breast lift (mastopexy) are two surgeries that can restore the breasts to their pre-pregnancy shape. During breast augmentation, breast implants are inserted to enlarge a woman’s breasts and give them a more shapely appearance. During a breast lift procedure, excess skin and fat is removed from the lower part of the breast in order to “lift” the breasts to a perkier postion. The nipples will also be placed in a higher position on the breasts. A breast lift can be performed along with breast augmentation or on its own for women who have not lost volume in their breasts but are experiencing sagging. These procedures can give women back the youthful and perky appearance of their breasts.
