The Precision Tx™ (previously known as the SideLaze 800™) is an exciting new laser technology by Cynosure that uses a side-firing laser (similar to the Cellulaze™ that treats cellulite) to treat the neck and face. You might also see this called the “Knifeless Facelift” or “Lazerlift” on the internet. This laser treats any excess fat, particularly in the neck, while also tightening the skin and the deep SMAS tissue of the face. This results in improvement and rejuvenation of the lower face, jowls, and neck.

It has been well known for years that heating tissues changes the collagen in the deeper layers of the skin, causing the existing collagen to contract and increased amounts of new collagen to be produced. This tightens the skin to yield a more youthful appearance. The problem has been heating the skin to just the right temperature, because too much heat can burn the skin, while too little will not achieve the desired results.

Unlike many technologies that apply radiofrequency energy, infrared light, or ultrasound energy to provide the heat, this laser technology is used with a temperature control system called ThermaGuide. This provides real-time temperature control about how much heat is being delivered to the tissues, leading to a more reliable result and increasing the safety of the procedure.  The procedure is not for everyone. Significant laxity can only be properly treated with more traditional surgical techniques (such as a facelift). Surgery may also provide a longer lasting result. But for those people with who have a modest amount of neck or face aging, or who simply don’t want to undergo surgery, the Precision Tx procedure could be the answer.  The procedure can easily be done under local anesthesia if desired.  The treatment usually starts with tiny holes (they don’t even need a stitch) under the chin and near each ear, application of dilute local anesthetic under the skin of the neck and face, and insertion of the laser fiber. The actual laser procedure itself takes about 20 minutes, and then a dressing and compression head garment are placed.  Because the tightening and skin thickening rely on the body’s natural collagen contraction and production, the result takes a few months to fully manifest, but early results will be seen in the first few weeks. Recovery is much easier than with surgery, and the garment can be removed in a few days.
