Most surgeries are done under general anesthesia, and Dr. Mackenzie uses anesthesiologists from the Anesthesia Medical Group of Santa Barbara to provide this for his patients. Some procedures can be done under local anesthesia, often with oral sedation and pain medicine. IV sedation or “twilight” anesthesia may be an option, but is still administered by an anesthesiologist just like general anesthesia. Contrary to what many people believe, general anesthesia is extremely safe nowadays, and is actually safer than many deep sedation procedures that may not be monitored by an anesthesiologist.
Dr. Mackenzie used non-narcotic pain pumps for years to help minimize the post-operative pain of certain procedures like breast augmentation, which can be particularly uncomfortable. He was also involved in clinical research on a sustained release non-narcotic medication for postoperative pain, which came to market as Exparel in April 2012. Excellent post-surgical pain is paramount, but after elective surgery it can often be controlled with a minimal use of narcotics when optimal non-narcotic medications and techniques are used.
