Fat Transfer – Dr. Mackenzie in Santa Barbara performs Fat Injection (Lipofilling)

Structural ProceduresVolume restoration of the face has many applications, both in cosmetic surgery and in reconstructive surgery.

Taking your own fat from one area of the body and injecting it into another, particularly the face, is a common and fairly simple procedure. This procedure can be known by several different terms, including fat grafting, fat transfer, fat injection, or lipofilling. Although it can be done under local anesthesia, general anesthesia is usually used, especially since it’s very common that other procedures are being done at the same time. Although it’s a fairly simple procedure, the technique and equipment used are very important to ensure that the transferred fat lives and the effect lasts.

Fat transfer can improve the volume loss of aging in the cheeks, correct traumatic defects of the face, or just provide more balanced and harmonious facial features. Fat grafting is performed by Dr. Mackenzie with almost all facelift procedures to restore the volume loss that comes with aging, as well as to improve the texture and appearance of the skin.

Some alternative procedures available include facial fillers and facial implants specifically designed for certain areas and effects, including cheek implants and chin implants. Injectable products like Radiesse, Restylane, and Juvederm, may also improve contours, and are usually used for specific areas where only a small amount of volume is necessary. Chin and cheek implants are typically used when the underlying bone structure is deficient.

Fat transfer can also be used for the breasts, to enhance the results of breast reconstruction or to perform breast augmentation using fat.  Larger volumes of grafted fat can also be used for buttock augmentation (Brazilian Butt Lift). Fat grafting is gaining in popularity and being used for more and more applications in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. There are often surprising and beneficial effects to the surrounding tissue, and this is likely in no small measure due to the stem cells that are transferred along with the fat. Overlying skin that has been damaged from sun exposure, and even from radiation, has seen improvement from fat grafting, with increased amounts of collagen and elastin.

For some fat grafting procedures, the Mirror Imaging System that Dr. Mackenzie uses allows him to show you what kinds of changes can realistically be made during your surgery.
