What is rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty is a minor surgical procedure that reshapes your nose. Depending on your personal preference, rhinoplasty can address any of the following issues:

  • Facial balance
  • A wide nose
  • Bumps on the nose
  • Abnormally shaped tip of the nose
  • Unbalanced nostrils
  • Nose asymmetry

Although rhinoplasty is sometimes recommended to correct breathing or medial issues, it’s generally performed electively to address aesthetic concerns.

What are the different types of rhinoplasty?

Depending on your reconstructive goals, there are different intensities of rhinoplasty procedures. The three types of rhinoplasty are:

  • Open rhinoplasty
  • Closed rhinoplasty
  • Tip plasty

Open rhinoplasties are most often used for major changes in the shape or size of your nose. During an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made between your nostrils which allows Dr. Mackenzie to fully access the structure of your nose.

He uses closed rhinoplasties for milder changes, and performs the procedure through incisions inside of your nose. The third type of rhinoplasty is the tip plasty procedure, which specifically targets the tip of your nose.

What will my nose look like after rhinoplasty?

Before the procedure, Dr. Mackenzie takes photos of your nose for reference. Using mirror imaging software, he can show you how your nose will look following the procedure. These images give you a reasonable expectation of the results of your rhinoplasty, and also give you the opportunity to discuss with Dr. Mackenzie the goals of your surgery.

How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?

As with any surgery, there’s a possibility of swelling and bruising. Most people wear small sponge packs in each nostril that are removed within two days of the surgery. You’ll also need to wear a splint on your nose for a week.

If you experience infracture, or alteration of nasal bones, as part of your rhinoplasty, you may experience increased pain and a longer recovery time. Dr. Mackenzie can discuss pain management strategies to maximize your comfort after your surgery.

If the shape of your nose is affecting your self-confidence, it could be time to make a change. Call Pacific Plastic Surgery or schedule an appointment online today for a rhinoplasty consultation.
